Numerical Simulation Technologies for Research and Development of Advanced RF SAW/BAW DevicesKen-ya Hashimoto (School of Integrated Circuit Science and Engineering, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, China)Abstract: Radio-frequency (RF) surface and bulk acoustic wave (SAW/BAW) devices are indispensable components of modern RF front ends, making advanced simulation tools essential for both product design and cutting-edge research. This lecture overviews key simulation technologies used in SAW/BAW device development, beginning with the general workflow of numerical simulation and its necessity. Three major modeling approaches are then discussed: behavioral models, such as the modified BVD model, which enable fast optimization of complex modules like filters and duplexers; one-dimensional models, including the coupling-of-modes and Mason models, which balance computational efficiency and accuracy for device configuration optimization; and full-wave analyses, notably the finite element method (FEM), which provide high accuracy for studying structural effects and extracting model parameters. Finally, the hierarchical cascading technique (HCT) is introduced as an efficient FEM acceleration method that significantly reduces degrees of freedom, especially when combined with GPU computing, enabling advanced analyses previously impractical.

Design of AW Filters based on Synthesis Methodologies and Physical ImplementationJordi Verdu (WavesLab - Telecommunications and Systems Engineering Departament, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona - UAB, Spain)Abstract: During the first part of the course, the synthesis of acoustic wave filters will be presented. These methods enable the analytical design of more sophisticated filter topologies that may go beyond the conventional ladder configuration. A critical aspect of this advancement is the deeper understanding and utilization of the input phase response. By controlling the input phase, designers can balance performance and manufacturability. These new synthesis techniques allow the creation of advanced filter structures capable of addressing multi-band requirements and sharper frequency transitions, all while respecting the physical and technological constraints of AW technologies. They not only provide improved performance but also maintain feasibility for large-scale production. The second part of the course will be focused on the transition from the reactance Butterworth Van Dyke model to a more realistic physical description of the resonators composing the filter. Different considerations must be considered, not only from the geometry limitations, but also the effect of unwanted spurious modes. The Coupling-of-modes, leveraged on 2D/3D Multiphysics modelling, allows to relate the ideal reactance with the real physical description.

Translating the Prototype to Physical Realization: Dimensional Design of Microwave FiltersYimin Yang (Xidian University, Xian, China)Abstract: This short course will focus on how to translate a synthesized filter lowpass circuit prototype into a physical realization with the aid of commercial EM simulation software, such as ANSYS HFSS (Finite Element Method based) and Mician (Mode Matching based). The lecture will emphasize on the mathematical insights needed to convert equivalent electrical parameters into physical dimensions, effectively bridging the gap between synthesis and practical engineering. Topics include the use of space mapping for coaxial resonator filter design and de-normalization techniques for waveguide filter design. Additionally, the course will briefly address the trade-offs between accuracy and efficiency in the detailed design process.
